Poem - I Hear
I hear
When I think of school
I hear
Kids shouting as they are playing and waiting for the bell.
The bell rings, everyone is thundering down the path so they aren't late for class.
When the last person is in class the door slams shut.
Everyone pulling out their chairs and they scratch against the carpet.
Then as the teacher comes into the classroom the kids are as quiet as a mouse.
But when the teacher leaves the kids are as loud as if they were lighting fireworks in the classroom.
I hear typing as they work on their blog.
Voices of people talking about things like what they are going to do this weekend.
Then when the bell rings to go home everyone rushes to get their bags.
Then all the kids say “Good afternoon Ms. Kirkpatrick.”
Then everyone is out the door.
And there, just outside the door.
As if it had never ceased to be
But only needed listening to
A little group of
leaves floating free.
Here is the original poem. I have written my own version.
