I read half of the book from Kristy's Big Day by Gale Gulligan and Ann M, Martins.
I think that they should try to sell the house to someone else or tell them that they can't move houses yet.
I am a Year 5 student at Panmure Bridge School, Auckland, New Zealand. My teachers are Mr Wong and Mr Ogilvie.
I read half of the book from Kristy's Big Day by Gale Gulligan and Ann M, Martins.
I read half the book of Dawn and the Impossible Three, by Gale Galligan, and Raina Telgemeier.
This story is about when dawn was babysitting her friends siblings and wanted her to be an official member of the Bsc so she wanted her friend to babysit with her and show her all of her babysitting skills,
I made a synthesis egg and a QAR template about a text called Pointless, Painful, Physical Education.
First I made Synthesis egg template where I wrote my prior knowlegde, my new information, and my new understandings. Prior knowledge is somthing that I already know, new information is something new that you learnt, and new understandings is what you unerstand now.
After that I answered questions and put them under one of the catagories called: right there, think and search, author and me, and on my own.
Right there is when you can just point to the answer. Think an search is when the answer is in the text but you need to think and search for it. Author and me is when the answer is not in the text, but you have to have use the information that the author has wrote to get the answer. On my own is when you can just go up to someone and ask them a question, and they will give an answer.
Addition and subtraction can be used using two stratigies: counting on/back and rounding and compensating.
Counting on is adding on using fingers, when the number is under ten. Counting back is subtraction using fingers, when the number is under ten.
Rounding and compensating is rounding the added or subtracted number to the nearest tidy number, then compensating for the rounding. Compensating is done by splitting the new number into the old number and the left over.
Counting on/back and rounding and compensating are easy stratigies are easy to use for addition and subtraction, when the numbers get too big to be solved with basic facts.
I wrote three different explanation starters in the three different stratigies, Basic fact, Question Hook and Explain Emotionaly.
Basic fact is just telling the reader what the text is about.
Paint!
Paint is made from pigment, resin and solvent all mixed together to become one.
The next way to write an explanation starter is a question hook. A question hook pulls in the reader and makes them think Hmmm? "I didn't know that."
Paint, But How is it made?
Did you know that paint has been used by humans for over 40,000 years? Paint consists of pigment, resin and solvent mixed together to become a colourful thick substance.
The last way to write a explanation starter is explain emotionaly. Explanation emotionaly is when you use fun words or something that we wouldn't have without...
A Colourful World
If we didn’t have colourful paint then the world would be boring and dull. Paint is created from pigment, resin and solvent mixed to create the colourful goodness we have to make art POP!
I learnt how to balance using different skills in Frisbee.
The first thing we learnt was throwing the Frisbee at our partner from our hip and straight so they could catch it.
The next thing we learnt was running and catching the Frisbee facing the direction said by Mr.Ogilve.
Then we learnt to throw the Frisbee, run and catch it and try to throw it at a target.
Lastly we used all the skills we learnt during a game called Ultimate Frisbee, it was non bib vs bibs. Not bibs won.
I enjoyed learning these balancing skills using a Frisbee. I also enjoyed playing a game of Ultimate Frisbee at the end.
I created a table mat on a book called New Zealand Film-makers specificly about Peter Jackson and used skimming and scaning to help me.
Skimming is when skip to find keywords. Scanning is when you read the text quickly and stop to read important information. Example: When you skim its like your an plane because when you skim you just read through the text without stoping. But an example of scanning your like a helicopter because helecopter can stop and hover while planes can't.
I found facts like In 1993 he made a film called Heavenly Creatures about an an usual murded that took place in the 1950’s, and Peter Jackson is one of the most famous film makers in the world. We rotated between different sports equipment like soccer balls, tennis racket and ball, and a volleyball to see how well we could balance doing them.
The first set of equipment was soccer balls. With the soccer ball we kicked the ball with our knee on one leg. I thought this activity was the hardest for me because I have small legs and it hurt when it bounced on my leg.
The next set of equipent was a tennis racket and ball. With the tenis racket and ball we tried to hit the ball while our partner threw it at us to hit. I thought this activity was pretty tricky because when you had to hit the ball you had to swing your body to hit the ball.
The next set of equipment was a hockey stick and a hard ball. We tried to hit the hokey stick on one leg without using the hokey stick to balance on. I thought this activity was hard because you couldn't use the hockey stick to help you balance.
The next set of equipment we used was a egg and spoon. With the egg and spoon we tried to balance on one leg while trying to lower the egg and using power to bring it back up. I thought that this activity was hard because when I tried to bring the egg and spoon back up quickly I lost my balance.
The last set of equipment we used was a volleyball. With the volleyball we either tried to set or dig the ball. I thought that this activity was easy because I practice for the interschool volleyball tournement with mr. Ogilve.
I found all of these acivites harder than the ones last week because we had to move more than the ones last week.
I learnt how to write a hook in an introduction.
First Mr Ogilvie showed us a video explaining what an introduction contains.
Next, we wrote an introduction and a hook about three different topics. Did you know that the largest firework display ever consisted of 810, 904 fireworks? A firework consists of gunpowder a fuse and potassium nitrate. When these three mechanisms come together they create a colorful explosion in the air.Step 1: read the day.
Step 2: read the number of the date.
Step 3: read the month.
Step 4: read the year.
Today I did some balancing using some sports equipment.
First I had to try and catch the frisbee while balancing on one leg without falling. I think that this was pretty hard to do but because the wind could blow the frisbee away so you had to move to the side to catch it.
For the next activity we had to dribble the basket ball and out partner had to try and catch it on one leg. I think that this activity was easy to do but when we had to dribble the ball from side to side it was hard to stay balanced.
For the next activity we had to throw a netball back and forth between eachother while standing on one leg. I thought that this activity was easy but then it got a little bit tricky when we had to try and catch is slightly from the side I started to wobble.
For the next activity we had to throw a rugby ball back and forth between eachother while balancing on one leg. I thought this activity was the hardest because when I was throwing from the side I lost alot of balance.
For the last activity we had to hit a small ball with a hockey stink without using the stick to help you ballance. I thought this activity was hard to because you couldnt 't use the hockey stick to help you ballance.
We learnt how to say over (runga) and under (raro) in maori.
First we learnt a sentence to say if something is runga (over) or raro (under). Kei ... i te pukapuka.
Next we learnt how to ask where something is. Kei hea te pukapuka.
Lastly we learnt how to say if something is here wich is anei.
I liked learning how to say if something is over or under something.
I revised ballancing and finding my tipping point.
First we did a warm up and did some basic fitness moves like squats star jumps and hight jumps.
Then I played a game called Tile Twister. Mr. Wong called out a body part and I tried to move that body part into a square on the floor.
Lastly we talked about controling you tipping point and how we did that.
I thought playing Tile Twister was tricky because you couldn't put the body part that was called out on a different colour.
I learnt how to tell someone to pass something in Te Reo.
First I revised what I learnt last week Tene(here) Tena(there) and Tera(over there).
Next I learnt a sentence thats tells someone to pass something to their left or right Hoatu te Aporo ki te taha maui or Tika (pass that apple to your left).
I thought it was interesting learning a question in Te Reo.
I wrote cause and effect sentences about the life cycle of a butterfly.
First I had to put an explanation of a butterfly's life cycle back togeather.
Next I had to write a cause and effect sentence of the butterflys eggs (stage 1.)
Then I had to write a cause and effect sentence about the catapillar (stage 2.)
Then I had to write a cause and effect sentence about the catapillars chrysalis (stage 3.)
Lastly I had to write about the chrysalis turning into a butterfly (stage 4.)
I think that it is interesting wen the catapillar makes a chrysalis and it turns into a butterfly.
We did reciprocal reading to help us read the text The Maori Pioneer Batallion.
First we decided a leader so they can assign everyone their job. there were 5 jobs.
Before everyone read the page the predictor had to predict what they think will happen.
Then once everyone read the page the clarifier had to identify any tricky words. Then everyone put the words on a key word list.
Next the questioner had to ask questions about the test and try to get an answer.
Lastly the summariser had to summarise the text by making it shorter.
I think the predictor was the hardest because you don't know what the next page will be about.
I learnt how to tell time differences.
First I figured out the hour between the two times. Which was 4 hours.
Then I had to figure out the minutes between the two times. which was 35 minutes.
Lastly I found out the total. Wich was 4 hours and 35 minuets difference.
I think I need to work on subtrancing my minuets because it was hard for me.
Manners are used to show respect to others. They are formal and can be used anywhere.
You can use manners when someone holds the door open for you.
You can use your manners when you give someone something or they give you something.
Today in groups we did problem solving about time.
First my group and I disscused the answers to the six questions.
Next we discussed how we worked out the answer.
Lastly we shared with Mr. Ogilvie about the answers and how we figured it out.
I thought this was hard because I didn't know which hand was the minute hand and wich hand was the hour hand.
These are simple machines that we found in the school.
Wedge, wheel and axle, lever, inclined plane, screw, and pully.
I learnt three preprositions.
The first Preprosition I learnt was tenei. tenei means here.
The second preprosition I learnt was tena. tena means there.
The last preprosition I learnt was tera. tera means over there.
I think preprositions are easy to learn and can help you tell posotions.
My group did an activity on balancing in our enviroment and took some photos of showing it.
First one of my partners balanced on 1 leg on top of a small ledge.
I learnt how to write an explination report and the struture.
First I learnt what an explination is. An explanation is to understand a process.
Then I learnt the structure of an explanation report. the structure of a explanation is TIMES.
I think that explanations are quite tricky to write and to remember the structure.
I learnt two questions and how to say them is Te Reo.
The first question I learnt was Kua Mutu meaning finished.
The second question I learnt was Kua Marama meaning do you understand. Or Marama meaning understand.
I liked learning these questions because I could use them anywhere.
Simple machines are tools people made a long time ago to make moving objects easier to do.
These are the six simple machines:
1. Inclined Plane
2. Wedge
3. Screw
4.Wheel and Axle
5. Lever
6. Pulley
I completed an activity about analog and digital time.
First I looked at the hour hand and looked at how many hours hae gone past, wich was 8.
Then I looked at the minute hand and looked at how many minuets had gone past, wich was 12.
Then I put them together and made twelve past eight (8:12).
I liked doing this activity because it helped me tell time.
Teamwork is a term to describe a group of people working together to achieve a goal.
Teamwork consists of three main mechanisims. Communicaton is talking to or planning somthing out. When people in a dodgeball team communicate they tell each other when a ball is coming their way.
Cooperation is being a good team member while working together. People in a dodgeball team cooperate by listening and following a plan to be successful.
Collaboration is working together to be successful or finish something. An example of collabration is when players in a dodgeball team collabrate and work together in a game to win.
To be successful as a team all there mechenisims need to be implemented throughout the activity.
I completed basic facts boxes up to 20. While dong the speed demon challenge you need to recall your basic facts.
I got 100/100 correct and my time was 6m 47s. I like doing speed domon challanges because It helps me recall my basic facts.
next time I will try to get faster at my basic facts up to 20. Then I will challenge myself and do my basic facts up to 100.
Making connections is a reading strategy that involves text to text, text to self, and text to world. These help you make connections.
Text to self is comparing a character or text to yourself. An example of text to self is the highway rat steals food from the villagers because he can't go get his own, and I stole my dads food because he stole my food.
Text to text is comparing a text to another text. An example of text to text is when the duck tricked the rat so that she wouldn't get eaten and in the story little red riding hood the wolf pretended to be the grandma so that he could eat little red riding hood.
Text to world is comparing a text or character to someting that happens around the world. An example of text to world is The horse lets the rat ride him because they think they are partners, you can also see dance partners at ballet lessons.
Making connections are an important way to understand a meaning or a similarity. Connecting texts to other things or people can help you understand similairities.
Marc Duffy is a Duffy role model who shares his story about his rough past and then he turned his life around.
When Marc was in school he had trouble reading from left to right so all of the other kids started to bully him for not knowing how to read correctly. largest bunnings manager.
Then when Marc was asked to leave high school after six months, he got involved with the wrong crown and was sentenced to jail for four years.
In jail there was a teacher who taught Marc how to read and then he got his diploma and school certificate, so then he went to university to become a counseller.
He learnt the trade of a builder, made his own buisiness, then he got a job at Bunnings got married and now he manages the largest Bunnings store in New Zealand located in Hamilton.
Marc is a good Duffy role model and inspirator. He said that if you take the t off can't, it makes can.
Multiplication is a fast way to add the same number many times. The three, four, and six times tables are examples of multiplication.
The three times tables are multiplying three by a number of groups.
The four times tables are multiplying four by a nuber of groups.
The six times tables are multiplying by a number of groups.
The times tables are an easy way to remember basic multiplication equations. The next times table to learn are the seven, eight, and nine times tables.

Information is to be kept safe or be shared with others. If information isn't kept safe there could be a problem.
Public information is information wanted to be shared with other people. An example of public information is photos of pets.
Private information is information that is not wanted to be shared with other people. An example of private information is your home adress.
If information isn't kept safe, it could be shared, brodcast, copied, or stolen.
A character trait is when adjectives are used to describe a character's behavior or adittude.
The Horse is grateful for eating what he is given.
The Horse is kind for not stepping on the ant to take their leaf.
Using these adjectives it can be inferred that the Horse is a grateful and kind helper.
The Horse | is a | Helper | in the story | The Highway Rat. |
A Characteristic of | The Horse | Is that he is | Grateful.
An example of this is | He eats all the unwanted food because he is grateful and takes what he is given.
The Horse | also shows | Kindness | when….
He doesn’t step on the ants because he is kind unlike the Rat.
To summarise the story of | The horse | is a | Kind, Grateful helper. |
Multiplication is a fast way of adding the same number many times. the two, five, and ten times tables are examples of multiplication.
The Two times tables are multiplying Two by a number of groups.
The Five times tables are multiplying Five by a number of groups.
The Ten times tables are multiplying Ten by a number of groups.
The times tables are an easy way to remember basic multiplication equations. The next times tables to learn are the Three, Four, and Six times tables.
For inquiry I had to compare 2 different dances from different cultures.
First I had to pick 2 different dances to compare. I chose Kapa Haka and the Waltz.
I Inferred facts and opinions about the horse from the story The Highway Rat. Facts are true things and opinions are things you think about the character based on the fact.
First I had to listen to the story and the movie to get some facts about the horse or the duck. I chose the horse.
Then, I evaluated some of the facts about the horse from the story. Then I wrote some opinions about the Horse based on the fact.
Then once I finished my facts and opinions I had to write some adjectives to describe the character during that time period of the story. The adjectives supposed to describe the traits of the character and not their appearance.
I need to work more on my adjectives that describe the characters traits because some of my adjectives describes the appearance of the character.
I did a Multiplication task.
First we had to learn what multiplication is to do this. Multiplication is a fast way for adding the same numbers many times.
Then my group was given an unknown amount of counters. Then we had to put them into small groups of 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's of 5's.
Then I had to use multiplication to find out the unknown amount of counters. Once I used multiplication to find out the unknown amount, I put the counters into a rectangle.
I learnt that Multiplication is a fast way of adding the same numbers many times.
